Training will support new cities in five countries, impacting services for 8.7 million residents

Today, the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, a global leader in public sector innovation that works to transform the culture and impact of government by marrying cutting-edge practice with world class research, announced that 13 new cities across five countries in Europe, South America, and the United States have been selected for the 2022 Innovation Training program. This program provides year-long training, coaching, and consulting to the city leaders of these 13 cities. As a part of the training, the cities will address a diverse set of pressing challenges that impact city residents – including climate change, waste management, gang violence and homelessness – and bring cutting edge public innovation practices, research, and proven design techniques into city halls to drive better results for residents.

“From combating COVID-19 to increasing affordable housing, we know that innovation methods make an enormous difference in the ability of mayors, city leaders, and their staff to better serve residents,” said Amanda Daflos, Executive Director of the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University. “We are so excited to launch this next round of Innovation Training in key, diverse cities and at a time when there’s a clear opportunity to develop and share solutions to help others across the globe.”

The thirteen cities that will receive comprehensive support from the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins are:

  • Birmingham, Alabama, USA
  • Bloomington, Indiana, USA
  • Calgary, Canada
  • Charleston, South Carolina, USA
  • Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
  • Dublin, Ireland
  • Fortaleza, Brazil
  • Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA
  • Limerick, Ireland
  • Maceió, Brazil
  • Orlando, Florida, USA
  • Pueblo, Colorado, USA
  • Warsaw, Poland

To help them address pressing issues, each city will receive:

  • Innovation Curriculum Instruction: Cities will enroll in a state-of-the-art innovation curriculum that teaches the public innovation approach through case studies, lectures, and hands-on experience and sharing.
  • Dedicated Design Coaching: A core team of up to 12 employees from each city will work with a coach to apply the innovation approach to their chosen problem.
  • Relationship Building: City staff will connect with a deep network of support made up of cities with successful innovation programs across the globe.

“The pressures of COVID-19, climate change, and a host of other global challenges continue to demonstrate the value of public innovation and the vital role cities play in the lives of residents,” said Roland Persaud, member of the Government Innovation team at Bloomberg Philanthropies. “Through Innovation Training, we are able to offer even more mayors and city staff access to proven curriculum and expert advice that help city teams take their innovation skills to a new level and apply them effectively and systematically to solving today’s biggest problems.”

The Innovation Training program is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and administered by the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins, whose charge to connect cutting-edge practice with world-class research is directly impacting community members in more than 40 cities across 19 states and 11 countries around the world.
