AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate

The Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University is seeking to fill 10 AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate positions in the five cities listed below. This is a nine-week, full-time summer position. VISTA Summer Associates will support impact volunteering projects in these cities, including Love Your Block projects and other community engagement activities.

The term of service for the next cohort of AmeriCorps Summer Associate VISTA members begins on June 26, 2023

Two VISTA Summer Associate positions are available in each of the following cities:

  • Hartford, Connecticut
  • Lancaster, Pennsylvania
  • Pottstown, Pennsylvania
  • South Bend, Indiana

Responsibilities  

Responsibilities vary by city according to project needs. VISTA Summer Associate responsibilities may include the following: 

  • Work directly with community groups and mini-grant recipients to implement projects related to litter reduction, minor exterior home repairs, and vacant lot activation
  • Cultivate and maintain partnerships among stakeholders such as community organizations, city agencies, nonprofit organizations, neighborhood associations, and block groups
  • Review and coordinate service requests from resident stakeholders with internal departments 
  • Draft press releases pertaining to program activities 
  • Design program flyers and brochures 
  • Work with neighborhoods to recruit volunteers 
  • Create and maintain a database of projects, partners, and volunteers
  • Assist in managing mini-grant recipient and partner relationships 
  • Coordinate project volunteers
  • Collect testimonials from residents that demonstrate program impact
  • Write stories about the impact of mini-grant projects
  • Build and maintain a social media presence for the program
  • Ensure that before-and-after photos are taken of each mini-grant project site as well as photos of volunteer work days 
  • Collect project metrics from resident volunteers and mini-grant grantees
  • Help secure funding to sustain and expand projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Compensation

A living stipend is provided as well as reduction of education costs. An additional end-of-service award is provided contingent on successful completion of the service term. Relocation assistance is provided if needed. Read more about Summer Associate benefits here

Qualifications

  • Some college experience preferred but not required
  • Some experience working in public or non-profit sector preferred
  • Some experience in communications, conducting community outreach, and managing projects
